The Forties

The war years and the influence of American comics saw the creation of the first genuine British comic book heroes. Demand soared as American comics became harder to obtain; a market had been created and now it needed needed filling. Some characters, such as the Bat, were obvious rip-offs of U.S. characters, but others were more original concepts, such as Robert Lovett, "Back from the Dead".

Post war Britain saw the influence of Superman become very evident, with a growing number of heroes with similar powers. Few of these characters lasted very long.
