Charlton Comics
Based out of Derby, Conneticut, Charlton was unusual in that they owned their own printing press (albeit not a very good one, as it had previously been used to print cereal boxes). They bought the rights to the character of the Blue Beetle off another company, and through the late sixties and early seventies published their own line of superhero comics. But by the late 1970s they had largely lost their impetus. Captain Atom, the second Blue Beetle, Nightshade and the Question made a brief return to comics in 1983 when Americomics licensed them and teamed them up for one issue as the Sentinels of Justice. They also printed a couple of new adventures for the Blue Beetle.
Finally in 1985 Charlton sold their characters to D.C. and closed up shop for the last time. In 1985 D.C. launched its epic Crisis on Infinite Earths, and at that point the D.C. universe absorbed the Charlton one. Since then many of the Charlton heroes have continued to play major roles in their new home.
It should be noted that while E-Man was published for a while by Charlton (before moving on to Modern Comics, and then First), he remained creator owned, and was not bought out by D.C. The same may well be true of Liberty Belle and Steve Ditko's Killjoy.
