History: In 1890s China the warlord Chao Ku had his assassins murder the mandarin Chung Yuan after he refused to be intimidated or bribed. Hearing his father's scream, the mandarin's son, Chung Hui, raced to the dying man's side. With his last breath Chung Yuan begged his son to put aside his scrolls and fight for the victims of men like Chao Ku, to be Yang to all men, the source of warmth and light and righteousness. The newly renamed Yang wasted no time in confronting Chao Ku, easily besting the warlord's men, but he fell prey to deception when Chao Ku's beautiful daughter, Yin Li, pretended to be another of Chao Ku's victims, tricking Yang into lowering his guard long enough to be drugged unconscious.
Chao Ku entrusted a chained Yang to his American confederate, the pirate Captain Keegan, who transported him and other Chinese abductees to be sold into slavery in the United States, to work on the railroads. However Yang soon escaped, and vowed to destroy Chao Ku for his crimes.
