Heroic Publishing
(previously Hero Comics)

It started with a roleplaying game. Champions, from Hero Games, was published in the late 1970's, and swiftly became one of the most popular of the new superhero RPG's. It was perhaps inevitable that some of the characters should transfer back to the medium which inspired them, and in 1986 a six issue mini-series was released by Eclipse Comics, covering the adventures of a hero team named The Champions (in the game this same team had been the characters of the original game designers, and had been known as the Guardians). The mini-series was sufficiently successful that a year later the title was brought back as an ongoing series, this time under the newly formed Hero Comics imprint. Several more titles were swiftly added, but unfortunately Hero Comics eventually stopped releasing titles, almost certainly a victim of the collapse of the comic market that hit so many companies at the start of the nineties. Unlike most of those groups (e.g. the aforementioned Eclipse), Hero Comics didn't vanish entirely, and it's still possible to read their stories in a weekly digest format at the official Hero Comics website at www.heropub.com. And new stories are in the works. Like I said on one of the other pages of this website, a good title or character might vanish for a few years, but they will always find a way to return from the darkness eventually.

Other past members of the League of Champions include the White Dove and Nightwind. Dove is an older heroine who retired before events in "The Curse of the Hellfire Crown" and went home to Texas to be with her husband, Fletcher. Nightwind is a gray-garbed hero who uses technology to simulate a ghost motif, is by nature a loner (Flare absolutely hates him), and is only nominally a member of League. Thanks to Dennis Mallonee for this information on the other, unseen members of the League, all of whom will eventually get entries on this site.
