Golden Heroes
Created by Simon Burley and Pete Haines, Golden Heroes was a British superhero roleplaying game (these days it'd be clarified as a "tabletop" rpg, to distinguish it from computer versions that have become far the more common, but in the 1970s through 1990s almost all rpgs were pen and paper). Rpgs had become a growing hobby since the 1970s, and superhero versions, both original ones such as Champions, Superworld and Villains and Vigilantes, and licensed, such as Marvel Superheroes and DC Heroes, were beginning to proliferate alongside all the other genres, so it was entirely predictable that someone would get round to producing a British version. Originally self-published in 1982 by Burley and Haines while they were both attending Birmingham University, the original edition with cover art by Jeremy Goodwin only had a print run of around 100 copies, around six of which were sent off to major rpg publishers of the day to see if they could get any to take it up for professional publication. Games Workshop bit, hoping to use the system Burley and Haines had designed to win the coveted Marvel license; though they ultimately lost out on that to TSR and their Marvel Superheroes game, in 1984 Games Workshop nevertheless released a Golden Heroes boxed set containing two rule books, the Players and Supervisors Guides, both featuring illustrations from British comics pros. Like all such games, they included entries for original characters, many (but not all) complete with illustrations and games statistics. Sadly the game didn't last long, with only two adventures, Legacy of Eagles and Queen Victoria and the Holy Grail in 1985, plus a Supervisors Kit. Games Workshop's White Dwarf magazine also published a couple of adventures for the game, as well as a short-lived ongoing column by Burley, and two more supplements were announced, the scenario The Lancelot Caper and the character book Megavillains, but these last two were never officially released, despite the former being nearly completed (it had gotten at least as far as playtesting). With Games Workshop retaining the rights to the name Golden Heroes, through the 1980s Burley published a fanzine, Superhero UK, that continued to feature characters and scenarios set in the universe he had begun creating, and eventually published a new superhero rpg, a spiritual successor to Golden Heroes, called Squadron U.K. A Kickstarter in 2015 (not by Burley) was launched to republish much of the Golden Heroes material, including the unpublished Lancelot Caper, but though it did hit its target, as of 2023 I believe the collected edition has yet to be released. |
