History: Sara Pezzini was the daughter of a New York cop. After his death she followed in his footsteps, becoming a homicide detective known for taking risks in the pursuit of justice. One day she and her partner Michael Yee were investigating a case that led them to the Rialto Theater, where they discovered a businessman called Kenneth Irons was staging illegal tournaments. Before they could do anything about this, they were both fatally shot. Michael died; Sara did not.

The prize in the tournament was an armoured gauntlet with an unique history. It was the Witchblade, a mystical weapon designed to be wielded by female champions. Over the many centuries since it had been forged notables such as Boudicca and Joan of Arc had used it. It called out to the dying Sara, and donning it, she found her injuries healed. The Witchblade housed a powerful spirit, making it a sentient weapon, but that spirit had a dark side. To fight its own potential evil the blade sought out human hosts with a purity to them, and though almost anyone could wear it, only those with great strength of mind, body and will could do so successfully. The symbiotic weapon was drawn to crises, drawn to fight evil, whether it be the evil of war, or that of Kenneth Irons and his right hand man Ian Nottingham. Having chosen Sara for its latest host, and saved her life, it would now take over that life. Her destiny would be forever bound to that of the Witchblade.

Yancy Butler as Sara PezziniComments: Witchblade was created by Michael Turner. Originally a comic from Top Cow, Witchblade premiered as a live action TV show in 2000. Sara was played in the TV version by Yancy Butler.

Other wielders of the Witchblade over the centuries have included such famous women as Cleopatra, Boudicca, Joan of Arc, Florence Nightingale, and Marie Currie.
