Powers/Abilities: Superhuman strength (strongest member of the Gatchaman team), superhuman agility (less than the others on the team, but still greater than normal humans). Able to fly / glide for short distances. Skilled martial artist, trained in sumo wrestling. When strength alone won't suffice, Ryu employs an air-powered harpoon weapon in combat, and later a sonic gun. For hand-to-hand, he sometimes used a Kusari-gama (a sickle at one end with a weighted ball at the other, connected by a length of chain). Brilliant pilot, flying the GodPhoenix, then later getting his own vehicle, the Horned Tank. When the team forms the Whirlwind pyramid, where they spin at high speed to generate a devastating tornado, he is the base for it.
History: The oldest member of the Kagaku Ninjatai team, Ryu is the team's muscle. He was recruited after saving Dr.Nambu's life during a boating trip while the Doctor was in Japan. He returned with Nambu to Utoland, where he was outfitted with a specialised equipment which allowed him to transform into a superpowered form. He was also the group's pilot, flying their main vehicle, the GodPhoenix. Because of this he often ended up acting as back-up during missions, and his desire to be more involved frustrated him. His closest friend on the team was Jinpei. In his civilian identity, he ran a marina called the Boat House Dragon.
Several years after first taking on the evil organisation, the entire team appeared to perish destroying once and for all the alien overlord behind Gallacter.
Comments: Voiced by Kanemoto Shingo in the original anime, and Tachiki Fumihiko in the 1994 revival.
