History: The planet Mars is divided into two hostile civilisations, the surface-dwelling and primitive Gruts, and subterranean and highly advanced Zoles. The Zoles are ruled by a High Council of elders, and as fears about the destructive evil of Earth-born humanity grows, they pick a Zole called Dervius to protect their world from mankind, as the Lone Guardian.
Dervius' lover, Tanya, is not happy with him becoming a pawn of the Council, but Dervius takes on the role nonetheless. Shortly afterwards he is tricked into attacking Marsprobe, the first manned flight sent from Earth to Mars. This is witnessed by Earth's hero, the Northern Light, who was watching the launch on TV. While Northern Light travels to Mars to investigate, Lone Guardian realises he has been manipulated and rescues the crew of the spaceship. The Zole then confronts his masters, but is put in check when they use a pain button on him, and he leaves them unharmed.
Shortly afterwards Lone Guardian once again comes to the rescue of the Marsprobe crew when they are attacked by Gruts. He meets and is helped by Northern Light, which proves to be vital when the Council render him helpless in the middle of the battle by another use of the pain button. With the aid of his new ally he still manages to prevail.
