The Incredible Hulk Live Action Series 1977

The Hulk was one of a number of Marvel characters optioned for television in the 1970s, the others being Spider-Man, Dr.Strange, the Human Torch and Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Worries over children trying to emulate their hero kiboshed the Torch series (but ironically his optioning also meant he was missed out of the 1978 Fantastic Four cartoon); the arrival of the overly similar Man from Atlantis killed the Namor series; Doctor Strange only made it to a pilot. Spider-Man, played by Nicholas Hammond, made it to the screens but only lasted two very short seasons of 14 episodes. Of all of the characters, only the Hulk achieved a long running series, with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno as Banner and the Hulk respectively taking the show through five seasons and 83 episodes. It even came back in the late 1980's with a series of television movies, which became the first time different Marvel superhero characters would get to meet up in a live action series. The Hulk himself was altered somewhat, never speaking (although ironically Ferrigno would later voice the character in the 90s cartoon and in both the 2003 Hulk movie and 2012 Avengers movie), and with Banner being a David rather than a Bruce. If it had one lasting legacy in the Hulk mythos it was Banner's catchphrase "Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
