Joshua

Real Name: Joshua

Identity/Class: Revenant

Occupation: Farmer

Affiliations: None

Enemies: Confederate soldiers reincarnated as a motor-cycle gang

Known Relatives: Unnamed family (deceased)

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Unknown

First Appearance: The Crow: Deadtime Vols 1-3 (Jan 96 - Mar 96)

Powers/Abilities: Joshua feels no pain and heals wounds in seconds, so long as they are caused in his search for vengeance. Injuries taken when he diverts from this path do not automatically heal. He can see through the eyes of his guide, the crow. He has psychometric abilities, allowing him to feel pain and other sensations from past experience by the slightest touch  of an object.

He appears to be faster and more agile than normal humans, and knows some variety of martial arts.

History: Joshua was a Native American of the Crow nation, who had left his tribe to become a farmer, adopting the ways of the white man. His lifestyle proved no defence when a band of marauding Confederate renegades rode through; they murdered Joshua and his entire family without hesitation. A century later the killers were reincarnated every bit as evil as their last lives, and drawn together to form a motorcycle gang. However retribution was coming when the Crow brought Joshua back to finally bring vengeance to them.

Comments: The first Crow to be created after Eric Draven. Unlike his predecessor, this Crow did not paint his face.

Iris Shaw

Real Name: Iris Shaw

Identity/Class: Revenant

Occupation: Officer for the Bureau of Land Management

Affiliations: None

Enemies: Unknown

Known Relatives: Unnamed and unborn child (deceased)

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Unknown

First Appearance: The Crow: Flesh and Blood Vols 1-3 (May 96 - Jul 96)

Powers/Abilities: Iris feels no pain and wounds do not slow her down. Unlike other Crows, she does not heal those wounds, so after a while she began to resemble a zombie, thanks to all the damage done to her. She can see through the eyes of his guide, the crow. She has psychometric abilities, allowing her to feel pain and other sensations from past experience by the slightest touch of an object.

She appears to be faster and more agile than normal humans, and knows some variety of martial arts.

History: Iris Shaw worked for the Bureau of Land Management, and was an honest and incorruptible law enforcer. This made her an impediment to those who sought to evade that law, and so she was murdered. Pregnant at the time, her unborn child died too, and it was the death of her offspring which provided Iris with the rage that was required for her to come back for revenge.

Comments: Iris saw a reversion to the face paint, though she had a new design, dis-similar to that of Eric Draven. In Iris' case, she has a crow drawn across her eyes and nose.

Michael Korby

Real Name: Michael Korby

Identity/Class: Revenant

Occupation: Unknown

Affiliations: None

Enemies: Carjackers

Known Relatives: Unnamed wife (deceased)

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Unknown

First Appearance: The Crow: Wild Justice Vols 1-3 (Oct 96 - Dec 96)

Powers/Abilities: Michael feels no pain and heals wounds in seconds, so long as they are caused in his search for vengeance. Injuries taken when he diverts from this path do not automatically heal. His regenerative powers are limited by the amount of Gorgon blood he has in his system. He can see through the eyes of his guide, the crow. He has psychometric abilities, allowing him to feel pain and other sensations from past experience by the slightest touch of an object.

He appears to be faster and more agile than normal humans, and knows some variety of martial arts.

History: After carjackers murdered both Michael Korby and his wife, a pair of crows returned Michael to Earth in search of revenge. The revenant was covered with tattoos which contained the blood of the Gorgon God, and each time he regenerated a wound, he used up some of that blood. With a strict time limit on his chances for vengeance imposed by the amount of blood he had available to him, Michael carried out his mission with a greater sense of urgency than other Crow avatars. He also had to choose whether to seek vengeance on one of his killers who had truly repented for his past misdeeds, and decide if a man has changed his heart, does he deserve to die for past transgressions?

Mark Leung

Real Name: Mark Leung

Identity/Class: Revenant

Occupation: Police detective

Affiliations: None

Enemies: Chinese mafia

Known Relatives: Unnamed wife (deceased), unnamed twin daughters

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Unknown

First Appearance: The Crow: Waking Nightmares Vols 1-4 (January 1997 - May 1998)

Powers/Abilities: Mark feels no pain and heals wounds in seconds, so long as they are caused in his search for vengeance.

History: Detective Mark Leung was marked for death for his part in cracking down on the Chinese mafia. The gangs brutally killed Mark and his wife, then kidnapped his twin daughters and sold them as child slaves. Brought back by a Crow to gain revenge, Mark instead tried to track down and free his daughters, thus giving up his mystical protection, and risking his very soul.

Comments: Mark did not paint his face like some earlier avatars. Since his eyes were ripped from their sockets during his murder, Mark wore a pair of sunglasses over the still bleeding sockets, with the Chinese symbol for "Devil Bird" written on them.

Ashe Corvin

Real Name: Ashe Corvin

Identity/Class: Revenant

Occupation: Car mechanic and body shop owner

Affiliations: Sarah Mohr

Enemies: Jadah Earl, Spidermonkey, Kali

Known Relatives: Danny (son, deceased)

Aliases: Michael Corvin (name in early versions of the script)

Base of Operations: Los Angeles

First Appearance: The Crow: City of Angels (Miramax, 1996)

Powers/Abilities: Ashe feels no pain and heals wounds in seconds, so long as they are caused in his search for vengeance.

History: After witnessing the murder of a man by a drug gang, body shop owner Ashe Corvin and his son Danny are murdered to silence them. Brought back from a watery grave, Ashe is helped to understand his mission of vengeance by Sarah Mohr, a friend of Eric Draven, a previous Crow avatar. However the two fall in love, causing a conflict for Ashe, who has been returned to life to seek revenge, not romance. The leader of the gang, Judah Earl, discovers how to sever Ashe's connection to his avian guide, then murders Sarah, leaving Ashe vulnerable for a final confrontation. In spite of this, Judah still loses in the end.

Comments: Played by Vincent Perez. The original version of the script for this movie (and indeed the filmed version prior to Miramax re-cutting it), was far more satisfactory than the finished version. Allegedly it also included a different end to the tale, with Ashe forced to live forever on Earth, denied Heaven for choosing to protect Sarah over seeking vengeance - however Sarah, murdered by Judah, also returns to life as a Crow avatar, brought back by her love for Ashe.

William Blessing

Real Name: William Blessing

Occupation: Professor and author

Affiliations: None

Enemies: David Marquette

Powers/Abilities: William feels no pain and heals wounds in seconds, so long as they are caused in his search for vengeance.

History: Murdered by an apprentice who coveted his wife and his stories, Professor William Blessing, an author with an affinity for Edgar Allen Poe, came back as a Crow avatar to seek revenge.

Comments: Though William is depicted on the cover of the novel wearing the make-up common to many of the avatars, there is no sign of it anywhere in the text of the book.

This novel describes for the first time the eternal damnation facing those slain by the Crow avatars - their punishment doesn't just end with their deaths.

As well as seeking revenge for the children, Amy also had to deal with discovering that her husband had moved on with his life and married her best friend, one of the few survivors of the blast.
