History: Mildred Hubble was a normal girl from a normal family, until she wrote an incredible essay and won a scholarship at Cackle's Academy. Her new school proved to be for witches, and well-intentioned but clumsy Mildred became the worst witch in the establishment. While many of her teachers and school mates readily accepted her, some, such as Etherl Hallow, were open with their disdain for a girl not from witch stock. Though she was initially quite bad at magic, Mildred's persistance and diligence paid off in the long run, and she even saved the school from hostile take-over by a group of evil witches.
Mildred eventually graduated from the Academy, and moved on to university, continuing her studies into witchcraft at Weird Sister's College in Oxford.
Comments: The Worst Witch originated in the best-selling books by Jill Murphy. There have been four titles in the series: The Worst Witch, The Worst Witch Strikes Again, A Bad Spell For the Worst Witch, and The Worst Witch All At Sea. In 1986 she was played by Fairuza Balk in a movie version of the first novel. In the ITV series version she was played by Georgina Sherrington.
CLARIFICATIONS: Not to be confused with
Hermoine Granger, who is an excellent schoolgirl witch
