History: Burton Slade was a reporter for the Daily Free Press who decided to become a masked crimefighter, adopting the name the Wasp because he felt the cape he wore resembled insect wings. Inspired by this, he makes a buzzing sound to warn his foes just before he attacks.
Comments: Created by Art Pinajian. The Wasp only appeared in the first two issues of Silver Streak Comics.
The usually reliable Toonopedia states that reports that sites which report that this Wasp made a buzzing noise before striking are in error; much as I hate to contradict my late friend Don Markstein, I've read this Wasp's first story, and the panel before the one above shows the thug asking "What wuz that buzzing sound?"
CLARIFICATIONS: Not to be confused with
Hooded Wasp, Street and Smith hero
Wasp, a remarkably similar Harvey comics hero
Wasp, Marvel heroine Janet Van Dyne
Wasp, Marvel hero Hank Pym
