As he appeared in his 1960's revivalHistory: Scientist Tom Higgins developed a secret chemical which could turn normal people into supermen, only to be killed in an explosion set by foreign agents. Dying, he managed to hang on long enough to pass the secret on to his son, Joe, who vowed to avenge his father's death and protect the American way of life from such men. In addition to the powers the formula gave him, he also designed a costume that made him invulnerable, and became the Shield.

Comments: Created by Irv Novick and Harry Shorten.

In the original issues, the Shield's powers were all described as coming from his armoured costume, but later stories confirmed that his powers were in him, a result of using his father's formula.

The Shield rescued a young boy, Dusty, from a plane crash, and adopting him, turned him into his sidekick. Dusty would often team up with Roy the Super-Boy, the Wizard's sidekick, and together (as the Boy Buddies) they often assisted the Hangman.
