History: Reporter Happy Terrill was covering the launch of a high altitude hot air balloon, but while taking a ride in it, he and the balloon's inventor, Dr.Styne, were caught in an electrical storm. The Doctor realised that they needed to seal the improperly shut outer airlock, and Happy volunteered to go out and do so. However while outside he was struck by a bolt of lightning/radiation; luckily instead of killing him, this imbued him with superhuman powers, which he used to become the crimefighting Ray.
Comments: Created by Will Eisner and Lou Fine.
The Ray adventured from Smash Comics #14 until #40. He returned after D.C. bought the rights to him, becoming part of the Freedom Fighters, and in the modern era produced a son who followed in his heroic footsteps.
