Base of Operations:

First Appearance: Rogue Trooper, 2000A.D. Prog 228 (IPC, 1981)

Powers/Abilities: As a G.I., Gunnar was immune to poisons and disease, and was faster and stronger than normal humans. As a bio-chip, he was attached to Rogue's gun, and could switch ammunition types or auto-aim and fire without his handler's help.

History: Gunnar was a Genetic Infantryman, a G.I., a clone bred by Souther scientists to fight the war against the Norts on the poisonous surface of the planet Nu-Earth. Years of chemical and biological warfare had covered the planet with a layer of toxic gases, and the G.I.'s were the solution to that, soldiers bred to be immune to all known toxins and so able to fight unencumbered by the bulky survival suits regular soldiers had to wear. Due to the extensive years of training each G.I. received, each G.I. had a bio-chip implanted in his skull, designed to record his memories and personality in the event of a fatal wound; the chip could then be cut out of the dying soldier and kept alive in one of the powered slots built in to his fellow G.I.s equipment (one in the helmet, one in the gun, and one on the backpack). So long as this was done within a minute of death, the chip would function, and could be returned to base where a new body could be grown for it. New bodies were cheap to make; the training wasn't!

The G.I.s should have turned the war around for the Southers. But on their first combat mission they were betrayed. Dropped into a "Glass Zone", where it was impossible to find cover, they were met with a devastating ambush. Only one survived, along with the chips of three of his friends, Gunnar among them; that sole survivor went Rogue, determined to hunt down the traitor. Fuller profile to follow.

Comments: The other chips were Bagman and Helm, attached respectively to Rogue's backpack and helmet.
