History: Ebony Jones was a top agent of the British Special Missions Squad, working with fellow agent Bleak. When Nazi war criminals took him prisoner in Merando, Italy, it was up to Ebony to rescue him.
Comments: Ebony was originally conceived to appear in a prospective new girls' comic intended to break away from the traditional mold of angst-ridden teen characters in favour of all action heroines. When the decision was taken not to go forward with the title, editor Bill Graham felt that Ebony was too good a concept to waste, and so transferred her to boys' comic The Crunch, where she debuted in issue 39, October 13th 1979, thus earning her a place in British comics history as both the first female lead character in a British comic, and the first black solo lead character in a British comic (the Harlem Heroes predating her as mostly black lead characters, albeit within a group strip).
CLARIFICATIONS: Not to be confused with
Misty Knight, Marvel's blaxploitation era kick-ass heroine
Jackie Brown, blaxploitation kick-ass heroine
