History: "Sometimes the law wasn't enough! Sometimes there had to be someone else!"

Science teacher Paul Cannon was a normal, unassuming individual until the night he witnessed some yobs force another car off the road with their reckless driving. In spite of his efforts to help free the people trapped in the burning wreck, he was forced to watch as a family of four burned to death. Paul testified in court against the driver, only to see him get off with a fine from a lenient judge after feigning remorse. The final straw came as he saw the killer and his friends laughing about how they had escaped serious punishment; it was clear they had no regrets whatsoever for the fatal consequence of their actions.

So Paul put his knowledge of science to work, spending several weeks creating an electrified lance capable of stunning or blasting destructively, depending on the setting. Wearing a helmet with a hidden drop-down visor and mounted on his powerful (and presumably modified and enhanced) motorbike, Paul became the Avenger, determined to bring justice back to the streets.

His greatest challenge came from the armoured supervillain Ultra-Man.

Comments: "When my helmet vizor is up it looks innocent enough! But when it's down I'm a different person!" Yeah Paul, but vizor up or down you are still wearing a blue crash helmet with the letter A in the middle of the forehead. It's a bit of a give away, isn't it? I don't think it should take too long for people to work out your secret identity. Science whiz he might be, but he's not exactly the sharpest tool in the box.

Terry Hooper informs me that Avenger was drawn by Mike Western and written by Tom Tully. Mike was interviewed in Terry's COMIC BITS 1 and again in issue 4 (and 5, specifically about the AVENGER).
