Purpose: To protect humanity

First Appearance: The Tomorrow People "The Slaves of Jedikiah", 1973
History: In the 1970's British television suggested that humanity was about to experience the next step in it's evolution. Around the world, young people were "breaking out" and becoming Homo Superior, or, as they called themselves, The Tomorrow People. Through the run of the original series and the revised version in the 1990's (and now some audio plays in the last year) The Tomorrow People followed the adventures of a constantly changing cast as an increasing number of individuals developed the telepathy, telekinesis and teleportation (jaunting) abilities that marked one of the Tomorrow Person. They were more moral than "Saps" (their name for normal people), being physically unable to kill. At the start of the series they had already made contact with the friendly aliens of the Federation, who had charged them with the protection of mankind and the Earth in general. They were based out of the Lab, hidden in a disused London Underground tunnel, where they make use of Tim, a biotronic computer which their alien friends had helped them build. The later (1990's) group had a similar mission, although without the alien help. When the audio plays were launched, it was established that this group had broken out while all of their predecessors were off-planet; John has now returned to lead a new group of Tomorrow People.
The Tomorrow People could teleport (the group in the seventies called it jaunting, and needed belts to focus their powers if they wanted to travel more than a mile or so; the nineties group could easily transport themselves all over the world without apparent effort); they were telepathic; and they were telekinetic (although the later group didn't demonstrate this ability, presumably they could have developed it given time). By the time of the audio plays, the older TP's could use their telekinesis to deflect bullets fired at them.

The Tomorrow People has effectively had three series - the first series ran on television in the seventies, the second ran on television in the nineties, with no reference made to its predecessor, and the third series came out on audio from Big Finish Productions, starring some of the original cast - this third run made some passing comments tying together the other two versions, establishing that all the original TP were off Earth during the period of the second series.
The Tomorrow People of the seventies had made contact with the peaceful Galactic Federation, and after a while many of them left to become Ambassadors for Earth out in space (e.g. that's why they departed the show).
The list of Tomorrow People is as follows:
Real Name: John Dixon Identity/Class: Occupation: Affiliations: Enemies: Known Relatives: Aliases: Base of Operations: First Appearance: Powers/Abilities: History: The oldest Tomorrow Person, and the first one of the modern era to break out and survive. The leader of the group, he sought out the others, made contact with the Federation, and built Tim. It is his genius and the patents for the devices he has invented that funds their activities. He still lives with his parents (his father a policeman, his mother unspecified) when we first meet him, in spite of being extremely rich (he doesn't work, but instead lives the life of a playboy, with trips to the Caribbean and his own personal glider plane). Comments: John stayed in the programme for the entire run of the original show, and is the star of the audio plays too. His surname was revealed in the audio play Trigonometry. |
Real Name: First Appearance: Identity/Class: Occupation: Affiliations: Enemies: Known Relatives: Aliases: Base of Operations: History: Carol broke-out before the series started. She has all the normal telepathic abilities, but also knows when they are about to be in danger. She helped Stephen break-out. She leaves Earth to become an ambassador to the Galactic Federation after the first season. Powers/Abilities: Comments: |
Kenny (Stephen Salmon) First Appearance: Identity/Class: Occupation: Affiliations: Enemies: Known Relatives: Aliases: Base of Operations: History: The youngest of the original Tomorrow People, like Carol and John he broke-out before the first episode. He leaves Earth to become an ambassador to the Galactic Federation, but is reported to have been killed during the second audio play, off stage. Powers/Abilities: Comments: His surname was revealed in the audio play Trigonometry. |
Elizabeth (Elizabeth Adare) First Appearance: Identity/Class: Occupation: Affiliations: Enemies: Known Relatives: Aliases: Base of Operations: History: A newly qualified teacher at Stephen's secondary school, the first signs of her breaking out came when she started to 'eavesdrop' on Stephen's telepathic conversations with John and Tim. When Jedikiah had captured the Lab she worked at, she broke-out and jaunted to the Lab. She managed to turn Tim's power-on long enough for him to contact Ambassador Timus. She went with the Tomorrow People to the Galactic Federation when they were evacuated from Earth. When the other Tomorrow People returned to Earth she remained with the Federation, and joined the training programme for the Galactic Police. Powers/Abilities: Comments: |
Mike Bell (Michael Holoway) First Appearance: Identity/Class: Occupation: Affiliations: Enemies: Known Relatives: Aliases: Base of Operations: History: An Eastender, Mike lived in a block of flats with his mother and sister. He developed telekinesis before any of his other telepathic abilities, a skill he used for petty thievery to start with. The Tomorrow People knew he was breaking-out, but did not try to contact him telepathically to try to reduce the pain of breaking-out. Mike remained a rebel after he joined the Tomorrow People. He didn't like taking orders from John, and often disobeyed him. Powers/Abilities: Comments: |
Real Name: Marneen Hsui Tai First Appearance: Identity/Class: Occupation: Affiliations: Enemies: Known Relatives: Aliases: Base of Operations: History: Hsui Tai was worshipped as a Child God in the Temple of Shansu. In two instances, he moved while he was teleporting, once while doing a backward flip, and another while he was running. He also demonstrated the ability to heal wounds (although this power disappeared after the first season). Powers/Abilities: Comments: |
Lisa Davies (Kristen Ariza) First Appearance: Identity/Class: Occupation: Affiliations: Enemies: Known Relatives: Aliases: Base of Operations: History: Lisa Davies was a 16 year old American who broke out early in the first story, very publicly while at a talent show her mother had forced her to enter. When she went up on the stage, part of the microphone she held fell off. The entire audience burst into laughter, and Lisa was so embarrassed that she teleported. Kevin exhibited the ability to read minds, teleport, and speak telepathically. He had been exhibiting his mind reading abilities long before he broke out, which was unique from the rest of the Tomorrow People. He broke out when he had a dream of Lisa's encounter at the Talent Show, and was so upset that he teleported right out of his bed. Powers/Abilities: Comments: |

She teleported on her own in the 4th episode of the Culex Experiment. Powers/Abilities: Comments: |
