Skywald was founded in 1970 by Sol Brosky and Israel Waldman, the company taking its name from a combination of part of each man's surname. Sol had worked for Marvel as a production manager while Israel was the former publisher of I.W. Publications (a.k.a. Super Comics), best known for producing unauthorised reprints of other companies' comics in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Seeking to appeal to the same readership as Warren's horror titles, Skywald's first publication was the black and white horror magazine Nightmare; subsequent titles included Psycho, Scream, The Heap, Jungle Adventures and Blazing Six Guns.
