Comments: One of the earliest full colour British weekly comics, The Rainbow debuted on the week of 14th February 1914. A "nursery comic" aimed at younger readers, the front cover starred the Bruin Boys, a group of anthropomorphic animals staying at Mrs. Bruin's boarding school, who had previously appeared in magazine and newspaper supplements. Other strips included "Bobby", "Bonnie Bluebell", "The funny adventures of the Brownie Boys", "The Dolliwogs' Dollshouse", "Full Speed Ahead", "The Island of Wonders", "Ken the Pilot Boy", "Marzipan the Magician", "The Adventures of Marmaduke and Montague, The Merry Mice", "Mops and Co. - The Chums of the Lower Third", "Mrs Tabby and her Tibbies", "On Holiday Farm", "Our Jolly Dolli-Wogs", "Policeman Pete", "Pride of the Ranch", "The Rainbow Pearl", "Sam the Skipper and his little son Jack", "Sing Hi and Sing Lo - The Chinese Twins", "Sonny Day", "Susie Sunshine and her Pretty Pet Poms", "Tommy and His Trains", "The Two Pickles" and "The Wonderful Wagtails".

The leader of the Bruin Boys, Tiger Tim, gained his own title in 1919, but nevertheless continued to appear in The Rainbow; Tiger Tim's comic eventually merged back into Rainbow in 1940. Rainbow lasted for 42 years, finally ceasing publication after 1898 issues on 28th April 1956, and merging into Tiny Tots. Tiger Tim survived The Rainbow's end, transferring to Jack and Jill.
