History: Kryten was a service mechanoid aboard the spaceship, the Nova 5. Dedicated to cleaning and serving his crew, he one day decided to wash the ship's computers, both main and back up. This caused the ship to crash into a small planet, killing the three women who made up it's crew. Kryten failed to realise they had died, although he died get a little worried that they weren't eating the food he prepared. Nonetheless, he continued to serve them for nearly 3 million years, until eventually the Nova 5 was found by the crew of Red Dwarf. Finally learning that his charges had shuffled off the mortal coil, Kryten was convinced to come onboard the mining ship. There he was treated like a slave by Rimmer, but after being taught how to rebel by Dave Lister, he set off to explore on his own, taking Dave's spacebike to do so.

He soon crashed it.

His pieces were found by the Dwarfers, and Lister rebuilt him, although not quite as he had been before. Since then he has worked alongside the other Dwarf crew members as a loyal member of the (highly dysfunctional) team - except on the odd occasion when someone has switched off his moral circuits.

Comments: Created by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor. Originally played by David Ross in his first appearance, Kryten has been portrayed by Robert Llewellyn in all subsequent episodes. He even reprised the role in the pilot for the aborted U.S. version of the show.

CLARIFICATIONS: None.
