History: "In each generation, a Slayer is born. One girl, in all the world, a Chosen One. One born with the strength and skill to hunt the vampires, to stop the spread of evil." Buffy Summers, stereotypical California girl, became the latest in a long line of Slayers reaching back into prehistory, when her predecessor India Cohen was killed.

Of course she didn't know anything about this heritage when she was first approached by Merrick, her Watcher. For nearly as long as there have been Slayers, there have been Watchers, chroniclers and trainers of the young women destined to become the Chosen Ones. Sometimes the Watchers can devine a potential Slayer from an early age, and will try to begin the training before the death of the current incumbent triggers them. Sometimes they don't locate them until they are already activated, and the news of what they are, and that they will almost certainly die young battling the forces of evil comes as a terrible shock. This was the case with Buffy, who wanted nothing more than to go shopping with her friends.

Faced with her destiny, and with a marauding and growing band of vampires, led by the ancient Lothos, preying on the local community, Buffy had no choice but to accept her new role. Before this baptism of fire was over, she had won the boy (Pike), seen the death of her friend Merrick, and burnt down the school gym, gaining an expulsion as a result.

Buffy's mother, newly divorced, decided that it was time for a clean break, and packed her daughter and herself off to Sunnydale, Ca. It seemed an ideal fresh start, in a quiet little town...built on a Hellmouth, with a trapped master vampire acting as a cork in the plughole to demonic damnation, a mayor who had sold his soul a century ago in order to transform into a demon any time soon, government funded agencies hidden beneath the university campus working on secret experiments to create a hybrid demon/human cyborg supersoldier, and ancient evil Gods working in the local hospital.

Having averted many apocalypses, including one which she died doing, Buffy finally managed to close the Hellmouth, albeit not without destroying the entire town of Sunnydale. Since then her whereabouts are unknown, though she was last reported as dating a being known as The Immortal while living in an apartment in Rome, Italy with her sister Dawn.

Comments: Created by Joss Whedon. Played by Kristy Swanson in the original movie, and by Sarah Michelle Gellar in the long-running TV series.
