The Bootneck Boy
Tyneside orphan Danny Budd lives with his brutal uncle Fred Bircher, and dreams of becoming a Royal Marine, or "Bootneck," like his late father. After being rejected because of his short stature, Danny gets into a fight in the street, and the Marine Sergeant who rejected chances to witness Danny holding his own against three larger boys. Impressed, he bends the rules to get Danny into the Marines, where Danny's bravery and determination gradually win over his doubting peers.
Created by Ian MacDonald and Giralt, The Bootneck Boy began in Battle Picture Weekly's first issue, 8th March 1975, and ran until 12th November 1977, ending to make way for the merger with Action.
