History: Anita Blake inhabits an alternate present. Vampires have been given recognition, rights and protection under the laws of the United States. Werecreatures abound as do witches, fairies, gargoyles, elves and all the other mythical creatures you've read about.

Because of their status as 'citizens,' the killing of vampires is strictly regulated; only a handful of Executioners are licensed to hunt rogue vampires and our charming Ms. Blake is one. Her day gig is 'animator' which is to say she raises zombies for a living.
