In 2006 the comic was adapted into film by Zack Snyder, with Gerard Butler playing the lead role of Leonidas. In 2014 a second movie, 300: Rise of an Empire, was released; based on plans for a sequel comic that had not yet been published, it was not strictly a sequel nor a prequel, as it depicted events that happened before the first movie as well as ones that happened simultaneous to the first but elsewhere in the conflict with the Persians. In 2018 the second comic miniseries, Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander, was released by Dark Horse.
